You are right, it takes a very special person to represent Santa Claus, and not every guy with a white beard is the guy in red. However, for some, Santa Claus is more than a symbol of the season. The man credited for the beginning of Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas. He was born in Turkey during the 270’s, and he looks nothing like the version of Santa we hold dear today. The look of Santa Claus we commonly recognize today was created by a graphic designer (also known as illustrator)  Thomas Nast for the Harper Bazaar Magazine in the 1860’s as cover artwork. 

Although red has always been Santa’s calling-card color, especially in America, he is represented wearing other colors and outfits in many different countries and cultures. However, what doesn’t change is the spirit of goodness that he ushers in during the holiday season.
